As I close my portfolio, my biggest question to myself is whether I’ve found the answer to my guiding question. As a reminder, here was my guiding question:

How can a deep understanding of each student’s unique identity, inform individualized teaching strategies and inclusive practices that not only support academic achievement but also promote social, emotional, and behavioural growth?

I think the answer to this question is quite broad and encompasses everything I’ve discussed throughout this portfolio. Identity plays a key role in how we learn and perceive the world around us, but it’s not always a straightforward process. Part of me feels that some aspects of this question cannot be fully answered right now. Identities are fluid, and as they evolve, there’s a constant need to adapt and be responsive to the changing needs of those involved. This doesn’t look the same for everyone, and for some, it may change frequently, requiring ongoing reflection and flexibility in our approach.

So where do I fit in? My professional goal is to gain more experience in the classroom. As I am within my first five years of teaching, I recognize that I have a lot to learn from both my colleagues and my students. I want to continue to build my knowledge on identity to help promote individualized support for students and adapt to the changing term that is “inclusion” to ensure that all learners are respected, valued and their voices are heard. My larger goal is to become a Learning Resource Teacher in my school, where I can take the strategies I’ve learned and have a broader impact, supporting not just the 20 students in my classroom each year, but many more across the school.

I think in many ways I have just started my journey and as a lifelong learner, my next step is limitless.

I am grateful for this program for expanding my knowledge, improving my reflection skills and giving me the opportunity to share and critically think about my learning and experiences. I am thankful for my instructors, professors and colleagues for giving me the space to ask questions and be vulnerable. I would like to thank my mother, sister and my aunt for their emotional support through this journey. Above all I would like to express my gratitude to my fiancé, for his unwavering support and encouragement through my entire program.

Thank you for reading and being a part of my expedition towards a more inclusive and individualized educational system.
